Mr Pang Kia Keng
China, Shanghai 中国上海
Shanghai is the largest city of the People's
Republic of China and the eighth largest in the world.
Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern
economy, the city also serves as one of the nation's most
important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and
communications centers. Shanghai has surpassed earlystarters
Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and has since led
China's economic growth. Despite many challenges today,
Shanghai's skyscrapers and modern lifestyle are often
seen as representing China's recent economic
development.
Huangpu River 黄浦江
If you ride a cruise boat along
the Huangpu River, you will take a
glimpse of the today and yesterday of
Shanghai. On one side of the river,
there is the Bund, a landmark of
Shanghai. Lining the boulevard of the
waterfront are grandiose solid
buildings of Western style dating
back to the early 20th century. You
will also see the Park Bridge, the first toll bridge in Shanghai; the
People’s Heroes Monument and Huangpu Park, the city’s first
park. On the other side is the image of a new Shanghai. Lofty
Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Lujiazui Financial Zone give a
fresh outlook of the city. On the cruise, you will also marvel at the
two giant bridges over the river. Cargo ships that sail to and from
on the river makes you realise how busy the trading business is in
this most bustling trade outlet in China. Sailing further northward,
you might be impressed by the scale of industrial plants, such as
the steel giant Baosteel.
The Bund 外滩
The Bund, also called the Zhongshan
Road, is a famous waterfront and regarded as
the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years.
Being one of the Top Ten Shanghai Attractions,
the Bund is a really beautiful and special place
which is worth visiting. The newly-built Flood Control Bank takes the
function of preventing the oversize flood; the square with the statue
of Marshal Chen Yi is an open air podium which gives new views of
the Shanghai Plaza Culture; the Cenotaph which stands on the manmade
island is a monument of people's heroes; the riverside
greenbelt, the Electronic Waterfall Bell, and the Great Mural Carving
are all representatives of the Bund. The Bund has always been
closely linked with the development of Shanghai.
Shanghai Museum 上海博物馆
Located in the center of
Shanghai in People's Square, Shanghai
Museum is a large museum of ancient
Chinese art. The museum style and
presentation surround visitors with
artifacts demonstrating ancient wisdom
and philosophy. The exterior design of the round dome and the
square base symbolizes the ancient idea of a round heaven and a
square land.
The museum is divided into eleven galleries and three
exhibition halls. The eleven Galleries cover most of the major
categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics,
Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming
and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities. The museum
now collects some 120,000 pieces of precious antiques, accounting
for almost half the total such collections in the country. The museum
is highly acclaimed internationally.
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
上海科技馆
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, an important
base in Shanghai for science education and spiritual civilization
construction, is dedicated to science education with "Nature -
Mankind - Technology" as its theme. The museum has integrated
participation with demonstration, education with scientific
research, cooperation with exchange, collection with production,
leisure with tourism, so as to popularize the scientific and
technological education for the visitors by means of knowledge
integration and learning through play, who will enjoy edification of
the modern technology and scientific spirit through various
amusing activities in the Museum.
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum currently has
opened 12 sections to the public, the whole exhibition area
covers 65,000 square meters. There are four special purpose
theaters in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, i.e. large
format theatre, Dome Theatre, IWERKS Theatre and Astronautic
Theater, which constitute the largest science film city of its kind in
Asia with 8000 filming times each year. Its function as scientific
education base and exhibition of science and technology has
been fully played out, which gains good reputations for the
museum. Visiting Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is
definitely beneficial for young scientists.
Yangpu & Nanpu Bridges 杨浦 & 南浦大桥
Yangpu and Nanpu bridges are,
at 7,658 and 8,346 metres respectively,
among the longest bridges of the world.
Both are of the double cable-stayed
suspension type with a long span.
The two bridges of the
Huangpu River combined with the
Oriental Pearl Tower form the
magnificent view of "two dragons playing the pearl".
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower 东方明珠塔
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is located
in Pudong Park in Lujiazui, Shanghai. The
tower, surrounded by the Yangpu Bridge and
the Nanpu Bridge, creates a picture of 'twin
dragons playing with pearls'. The 88-storey
tower is 420.5 meters tall and covers an area of
2.3 hectares.
This tower is the asia’s tallest, however,
even more alluring is the tower's unique
architectural design that makes the Oriental Pearl TV Tower one
of the most attractive places anywhere. The architect, Adrian D.
Smith, of this skyscraper ingeniously combined the elements of
traditional Chinese culture with the newest architectural styles of
the time.
Once you reach your destination, you will be amazed at
the variety of activities available. The inner tower is a recreational
palace, while the Shanghai Municipal History Museum is located
in the tower's pedestal. The base of the tower is home to a
science fantasy city. When viewed from the Bund at night, the
tower's three-dimensional lighting makes it a delight of brilliant
color.
“Pedestrians Only” Nanjing Road 南京路步行街
Flanked on both sides by famed
shopping centers, departmental
stores, specialty stores, exotic
restaurants and cultural and
recreational facilities, the 5-km-long
Nanjing Road is the most
sophisticated shopping and tourist
complex in Shanghai. Every day it
is thronged by more than 1 million visitors.
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall
上海城市规划展览馆
The Shanghai Urban
Planning Exhibition Hall is located
on People's Square, Shanghai,
China, adjacent to the municipal
government building.
The Exhibition Hall is a 6
storey building, with two basement
levels, which displays Shanghai's
urban planning and development.
Exhibitions include models of planned and recent developments,
as well as Shanghai's history. The centerpiece of the exhibition is
a huge scale model of the city of Shanghai, showing all existing
and approved buildings. Visitors can view how the city of the
future will look like at "ground level", or ascend a gallery running
around it for views from above.
The model is intended to represent the entire city,
including all planned developments. However, a few stout pillars,
necessitated by the building design, penetrate the scale model.
This means certain areas are missing from the model, and views
of the model are sometimes obscured by the columns.
Oriental Green Boat 东方绿舟
Located at 6,888, Hu-Qing-Ping Expressway,
Shanghai, The Oriental Green Boat covers an area of
5,600 mu. It consists of 9 fields: knowledge road field,
brave wisdom field, national defense education field,
survival challenge field, science exploration field,
water sports field, physical training field, life
experience field, and sports and exercise field. The
aircraft carrier is part of a larger military education
museum. It is about 30 miles from Shanghai and a
little less than an hour's drive. There are displays inside and models
of missiles and some real planes.
The purpose of the park is to provide a jump start through
education for the future of China by combining fun with advanced
lessons. It combines the natural geographical location with the human
landscape and integrates learning, the toughening of one’s character
and sightseeing into one. In addition, they can also do survival
trainings and outdoor camps. To inspire them, there is a road lined
with statues of great thinkers, scientists, and inventors.
Shanghai Maglev Train 上海磁浮列车
Shanghai Maglev line began its
construction on March 1, 2001 and the train
was put into trial operation on December 31,
2002. The maximum speed is 430 km/h and
the speed at which two trains intercross
each other reaches 700 km/h. The train has
been authorized by Guinness Records to be the fastest train in the
world.
So many countries in the world have been involved in the
researches of the maglev technology, but only in Shanghai a real
maglev operation line was successfully built. The success again
proves that the maglev technology is safe, economical and advanced.
Maglev train should be regarded not merely as a fundamental
breakthrough, but much more as an example of a modern transport
means.
